Lindsey Paints a Surfboard

The other day in San Clemente, we were super early to a shindig, so we stopped at local flip flop heaven, Rainbow Sandals, and then found a great little surf shop that looked like it was having a sale. Sure enough....

We found a 6'5" shortboard for $35 and left with it and a promise from Jon to teach me to surf. Oh, and a promise from me to paint it.So in researching designs and methods, I found Drew Brohpy, one amazing hound dog of surf art--this guy seriously lives a dream job. He hosts several tutorials and paints his skate/surf boards, helmets, and sculptures with Uni-Posca waterbased paint pens and seals them with a spray sealant. I quickly grabbed me up some pens (Brohpy sells them on his site, but we couldn't wait for shipment), and we were ready to go.I did a little drawing first, but Jon wasn't crazy about the turtle, so I left it out. The whole thing took me about 3.5 hours, and those pens are NOT cheap. This was probably a $100 project, when all is said and done. The pens are difficult to blend, and I had a tough time drawing on existing paint layers, drawing right on the board was much smoother.
I felt like a surfer chick (or at least a poser), but it would have been way cooler if I did this at the beach. As it was, it was boilin' hot outside so I had to bring the excitement in.

It was pretty great to paint something a little different than my usual, and I'm quite pleased with it. Now we just have to seal it and we're ready for some waves. What is the coolest thing you've ever painted on? Oh, and any ideas for the back?

And if you haven't entered my giveaway, do so here before Wednesday, July 8th!

You are... extraordinarily talented. I really love this surf board. I am moving to Hawaii, and think I may need a hand-painted board. :) Thanks for the inspiration.
